Young Fantasy Baseball Prospects for June, 2014

Rookies have been the talk of the town as Oscar Taveras and Jonathan Singleton both got promoted to the Show this past week and another debut is on the way.

Taveras was the No. 3 overall prospect heading into the season, according to Baseball America, and we were shown why as he belted his first career homerun in his second career at-bat. We talked about Taveras’ potential impact in the top-hitting prospects article in early April. The kid has an extremely bright future and figures to get lots of playing time and owners who were lucky enough to pick him up will luck out.

The Astros made a somewhat surprising move on Monday when they signed their top-hitting prospect, Jonathan Singleton, to a five-year deal worth $10 million. The deal has incentives that could make it worth up to $35 million over the span.

Like Taveras, the 22-year-old first baseman also homered in his Major League debut. Singleton has good power and had hit 14 jacks in 54 games in Triple-A before his promotion. Fantasy owners shouldn’t expect too much more than that though, making the former eighth-round pick only valuable in deep leagues at this point.

All the focus may turn to the Rockies’ Eddie Butler, who will make his professional debut against the Dodgers on Friday. The 23-year-old righty deserved the call to the Show after posting a 2.49 earned run average over 11 starts in Double-A.

We first mentioned Butler as one of the top-pitching prospects in late April and his value has continued to rise. The former first-round pick (46th overall) in 2012 has the repertoire to dominate at the next level. Fantasy owners in all leagues should consider picking him up now as it might be too late after next week.
