2011 Fantasy Baseball Sleepers and Busts

2011 Fantasy Baseball BustsEvery fantasy baseball owner has a list of their favorite sleepers but they should also beware of the top 2011 fantasy baseball busts. Click here for our list of the top 2011 fantasy baseball sleepers. Producing a list of fantasy baseball busts was a much more difficult task than coming up with the list of sleepers. Nonetheless, here is a list of busts that you not be eager to draft… Better yet, why don’t you completely avoid these busts in your MLB fantasy baseball draft.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Busts - David Ortiz1. David Ortiz, DH, Boston Red Sox – Hitting in the games’ most potent line-up bodes well for Ortiz who is past his prime and still drilled 32 home runs and knocked in 102 runs in 2010. But Big Papi’s swing seems to be slowing down a bit and the career-high 145 strikeouts last year indicate that. The fact he is only eligible as a designated hitter/UTIL in most leagues and his .222 batting average against left-handed pitching last season, both lessen his value. His skills will continue to digress and it’s not likely that he will reach 30 home runs and 100 RBIs in a season again.

2. Lance Berkman, RF/1B, St. Louis Cardinals – The questions remains if whether the aging Berkman can hold up health-wise playing the outfield everyday. The switch-hitter battled injury last season playing for the Houston Astros before being traded by the New York Yankees, and his production suffered dramatically. Now in the twilight of his career and with injuries becoming more of a concern, avoid drafting Berkman in your league and look for an option with more upside.

2011 Fantasy Baseball Busts - Phil Garner yanks RP Brad Lidge3. Brad Lidge, RP, Philadelphia Phillies – The right-handed closer is scheduled to have an MRI performed on March 29 to see if there is structural damage in his throwing shoulder. Consider him high-risk even though he had a decent year in 2010, converting 27 out of 32 save opportunities and possessing a 2.96 ERA. The potential injury risk is a concern, but even if it turns out to not be a concern, Lidge has proven to be inconsistent in his ERA over his career. These are his ERA totals from 2003, his first full season to last season, respectively: 3.60, 1.90, 2.29, 5.28, 3.36, 1.95, 7.21 and 2.96.
